Maladaptive Daydreaming is a kind of a ”disorder” or more precisely, a psychiatric condition. It’s when you create scenarios of your own and play along with it by creating characters in your head - you may be a member of a music band, the president of the United States, an actor, a singer or a sportsperson. Imagining these types of stuff occasionally is okay, but obsessively subsisting with this every day is risky. Researchers even link Maladaptive Daydreaming to Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). MD is addictive. It never stops until you are gratified and starts again. You’re missing out on real elements in life by fantasising “what could’ve been”.
Most people with MD don’t realise their daydreams are a condition and it’s being researched. They are embarrassed to talk about it to others, hence they don’t learn there are millions of people that suffer from this.
Maladaptive Daydreaming can be repressed by proper adjustments to your thinking patterns. You should suppress your thoughts and ideas hastily so that the story wouldn’t cultivate further. Monitor your thoughts while it’s happening and come back to reality. You don’t need this method of contentment to your life. You are talented and amazing. You don’t need fake scenarios and fake characters to make you feel good about yourself.
Broaden your spiritual connectivity, meditate, spend less time with your phone and PC, communicate with real people and read more about Maladaptive Daydreaming (which I will blog about from time to time). You can do this!
If you’re experiencing MD, seek a professional psychiatrist or discuss with me on cozynazneen@gmail.com.
Take care!
