Beans thoran is a delicious recipe made with french beans (green beans).

The smell of coconut oil along with the fresh smell of beans makes this dish delicious. Yes! and grated coconut is what makes this beans thoran totally authentic.

Thoran is a Keralan dry side dish that is done with coconut, spices, coconut oil and onions. Beans thoran is one such variation of thoran.

While making thoran, it’s obligatory to use coconut oil because any other oil won’t bring out that relishing flavour.

Beans thoran is made as a side dish to go with sambar rice or rasam rice. It’s a popular South Indian side, Tamils usually call it as Beans Poriyal and they serve it in their feasts along with Aloo / potato masala, you can check the recipe here. In kerala Beans thoran is served in their feast called sadya.

Ingredients

Beans – 200 g

Onion – 1 medium

Coconut shredded – 3 tbsp

Coconut Oil – 3 tbsp

Mustard seeds - 1 tsp

Chilli powder – 1 tsp

Turmeric powder – ½ tsp

Salt as required

Method

1. Chop beans and onion.

2. Heat coconut oil in a pan, splutter mustard seeds and sauté onion with some salt.

3. When onion goes transparent, add beans.



4. Cook under medium flame and add chilli powder and turmeric powder and mix well.



5. Close the lid and cook for 8 mins.

6. Open the lid and beans should’ve shrunk by now.



7. Add required amount of salt.

8. Low the flame and stir everything well.

9. After the beans are fully cooked, you may off the flame or keep it in low and add the shredded coconut shavings into it.



10. Mix it well and turn off flame.

Tasty and nutritious Beans Thoran is ready!
